NC DL-4A driving log
Form DL-4A is the NCDMV log you complete to move from a Level 1 Limited Learner Permit to a Level 2 Limited Provisional License. Someone searching "NC DL-4A driving log" is usually filling this out, not browsing driving apps.
What the form asks for
Each row is one practice session. The official PDF (revised 09/2011) has columns for:
- Date
- Time of day (daylight sessions)
- Time of night (after-sunset sessions)
- Amount of driving time, in hours
- Supervising driver's printed name
- Supervising driver's license number and state
Totals at the end split day hours, night hours, and a grand total. Night must reach 10. Grand total must reach 60. The supervising driver signs a certification under G.S. 20-11(d).
Rules that trip people up
- Ten hours a week, not more, count. Extra practice is fine. Extra credited hours in one week are not. G.S. 20-11 is explicit.
- Falsifying the log has a cost. If NCDMV believes the log is fake, the permit holder must start a new 60-hour log and waits six months to get Level 2.
- The supervisor is not just any licensed adult. Parent, grandparent, guardian, or a person the parent approved, licensed at least five years, seated beside the driver.
